The Brigham Young Cougars, commonly known as the BYU Cougars, are a college football team that competes in the West Division of the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The team was first established in 1922 and has had a long and storied history since then.

Throughout the years, the BYU Cougars have had a number of successful seasons, including several appearances in the NCAA Division I-A playoffs, and winning the National Championship in 1984. The team has also been crowned conference champions multiple times, winning the WAC (Western Athletic Conference) in 1984, 1996 and 2001 and Mountain West Conference in 2006, 2007 and 2010.

One of the most notable moments in BYU's history came in 1984, when the team won the National Championship under the leadership of head coach LaVell Edwards. The team finished the season with a perfect 13-0 record and defeated Michigan in the Holiday Bowl to claim the title. The team was led by quarterback Robbie Bosco and a strong defense, and is considered to be one of the best teams in college football history.

The team has had a number of notable coaches throughout its history, including LaVell Edwards, who coached the team from 1972 to 2000, and Gary Crowton, who coached the team from 2001 to 2005. Edwards is widely considered to be one of the best coaches in BYU history, leading the team to a 257-101-3 record during his tenure, while Crowton led the team to the 2001 WAC Championship and the 2002 Liberty Bowl.

In recent years, the BYU Cougars continue to be a competitive team in the FBS. The team has had a winning record for last decade and has made several appearances in the bowl games.
