The Nebraska Cornhuskers are the athletic teams representing the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. The Cornhuskers have a rich history of success, particularly in football, which has helped to make the university one of the most recognizable and respected athletic programs in the country.

Early Years

The Nebraska Cornhuskers football program began in 1890, with a 10-0 victory over the Omaha YMCA. The team struggled in its early years, but by the 1910s, it had become a consistent contender in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC).

In 1915, the Cornhuskers won their first conference championship, and they continued to win championships in the MVC throughout the 1920s and 1930s. During this time, the team was led by head coach Dana X. Bible, who is credited with popularizing the "Nebraska style" of football, which emphasized a strong running game and tough defense.

Bob Devaney Era

The Cornhuskers experienced a period of sustained success under head coach Bob Devaney, who was hired in 1962. Devaney led the team to two national championships in 1970 and 1971, and five consecutive conference championships from 1969 to 1973.

During Devaney's tenure, the Cornhuskers had a number of notable players, including quarterback Jerry Tagge, running back Johnny Rodgers, and defensive end Rich Glover. Rodgers won the Heisman Trophy in 1972, becoming the first Nebraska player to win the award.

Tom Osborne Era

The Cornhuskers continued to experience success under head coach Tom Osborne, who was hired in 1973. Osborne led the team to three national championships in 1994, 1995, and 1997, and 13 conference championships during his tenure.

Osborne's teams were known for their powerful running game, which was led by standout players like running backs Mike Rozier, Tommie Frazier, and Lawrence Phillips. The Cornhuskers also had a dominant defense during this time, which was anchored by players like defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.

Recent History

Since Osborne's departure in 1997, the Cornhuskers have experienced mixed success on the football field. However, the team has continued to produce NFL-caliber players, including quarterback Eric Crouch, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2001.

The Cornhuskers have also had success in other sports, including volleyball and wrestling. The volleyball team has won five national championships, including four consecutive titles from 2006 to 2010. The wrestling team has won seven national championships, including three consecutive titles from 1994 to 1996.

Conclusion

The Nebraska Cornhuskers have a rich athletic history, with notable achievements in football, volleyball, wrestling, and other sports. The team has produced numerous NFL and Olympic athletes, as well as successful coaches and administrators. While the Cornhuskers have not achieved consistent success in football in recent years, the program remains a proud and important part of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and the Big Ten Conference.
