The Tennessee Titans are a professional football team based in Nashville, Tennessee. They are members of the South Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The Titans were originally known as the Houston Oilers, a team that was founded in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). The Oilers played in Houston until 1997, when they relocated to Tennessee and became the Titans.
The Titans have had a successful history, winning nine division titles and appearing in the playoffs 17 times. They have also made two appearances in the Super Bowl, losing both times. Despite facing challenges such as injuries and financial difficulties, the Titans continue to compete at a high level and are a popular and respected team in the NFL.
The Titans got their start in the NFL as the Houston Oilers in 1960. The team was one of the original members of the AFL and was led by head coach Lou Rymkus and quarterback George Blanda. The Oilers enjoyed success in their early years, winning two AFL championships and making multiple playoff appearances.
In the 1970s, the Oilers continued to be a competitive team, led by head coach Bum Phillips and featuring standout players such as Earl Campbell and Dan Pastorini. However, the team struggled to find sustained success and failed to make it to the Super Bowl.
In the late 1980s, the Oilers underwent a resurgence, thanks in part to the hiring of head coach Jack Pardee and the emergence of quarterback Warren Moon. The team made the playoffs six times in the 1980s and 1990s, and reached the AFC Championship game in 1991 and 1993.
In 1997, the Oilers relocated to Tennessee and became the Titans. The team struggled to adapt to its new home and had a series of losing seasons in the late 1990s and early 2000s. However, the Titans began to turn things around in the mid-2000s, thanks in part to the hiring of head coach Jeff Fisher and the emergence of quarterback Steve McNair.
The Titans made the playoffs six times in the 2000s and reached the AFC Championship game in 2002 and 2003. In 1999, the team also made its first Super Bowl appearance, losing to the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXIV.
